Elmas Deniz webprofile

Elmas Deniz (b.1981, Bergama, Turkey) is an artist based in Istanbul. Her artistic practice explores questions around economy (inequalities and value systems) and nature (the idea of nature, our consumption and perception of it, ecological concerns and the consequent exploitations.) In her first solo exhibition ELMAS at Maçka Sanat (2013) she explored various forms of poverty and signifiers associated with it through personal and collective memory. Entitled Seeing the Black Panther (2014), her solo show at Pilot Gallery was a humorous statement on nature and the economic system. Recent group exhibitions include Till It’s Gone, Istanbul Modern (2016); the 14th Istanbul Biennial; SALTWATER Theory of Thought Forms (2015), The Moving Museum Istanbul (2014); Unrest of Form, Secession, Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna (2013). She is the initiator of several artist-run projects, and co-editor of the journal Sanat Dünyamız. She was awarded IASPIS Artist Grant in 2014 (Stockholm, Sweden), Berlin Goethe Institute Cultural Grand(2007), and has been a resident at Pistoletto Foundation IT (2011); Sextant e Plus La Friche Belle de Mai, Marseilles, FR (2009); DIVA Copenhagen, DK (2008) and Vassl, Karachi, PK (2006), AIWA Lebanon(2005). www.elmasdeniz.com
